Sewing Tuesday: Beachy needle case.

Oh hello!
I made this pretty beach style needle case holder today. I found a cool shell on the beach this morning it has the middle bit missing so it looks like a hoop. I've used it and a teeny drift wood twig toggle to fasten the needle case together. Want to learn how?

If you don't live by the sea then you could use an any twig and hoop shape you can find. Have a look around your garden! Maybe a key ring or a washer (ask you dad or uncle or granddad, they are usually good at finding things like that). You could also use just a sew hoop of string on instead of the shell hoop.

You will need:

  • Scissors.
  • Felt rectangles, one shorter one that fits easily inside the other.
  • Needle and pins.
  • Thread.
  • String.
  • A hoopy shell or whatever you are going to use.
  • A twig.

Step 1.
The case
I used pinking shears to cut around my small felt but you don't have to.
  • Put the smaller piece of felt on top of the bigger piece off centre.
  • Pin it down.
  • Check the GETTING STARTED post for sewing instructions and tips if you need to!
  • Sew running stitches in a line along the middle of the smaller piece of felt.

Step 2.
The toggle fastening.
  • Fold the needle case along your stitches so that they appear on the spine like in the picture below.
  • Pin the needle case together.
  • Tie your string around the twig.

  • Fold the closing flap of the case over and pin it closed where you want it.
  • Lay the string and twig toggle over the join of the flap.
  • Pin the string like in the picture below.

  • Sew through the string and over the string to hold it firmly in place.

  • Put the shell or whatever hoop shape you are using over the twig toggle.
  • Pull it tightish over to the side.
  • Put a marker pin in where the hoop reaches to like in the picture below.

  • Undo the toggle and open up the case, keeping the marker pin in the same place.
  • Sew a few stitches over the shell or hoop to hold the far side of it down.

  • Pop your needle inside!
  • Close up the case and fasten the toggle.

Done!

I hope you enjoy making your needle case! You could use the toggle fastening on all sorts of different things. It'd look really fancy instead of buttons on a nice cardigan!
Happy sewing!
Holly.
