Sewing Tuesday: Creature cupcake costume.

Hi! It's coming up to my birthday so I thought I'd make Blue Creature a cupcake outfit. He loves it, especially since he gets to hang out near cakes!

Looks tasty! Here's how to make your own cupcake outfit! If you don't have a blue creature, here's a link to how to make one:

You will need:

  • Blue creature puppet.
  • Cake coloured felt, icing coloured felt, cake case coloured felt, red felt for the teeny cherry.
  • Coloured threads.
  • Scissors.
  • Pencil and paper.
  • Glue.
  • Needle.
  • Pins.

Step 1.
Basic shapes.
Draw a wide line around your creature like in the picture below.

Cut the shape out and pin it to the cake coloured felt. Cut out two of these.

Take one of the cake pieces and cut a face hole in it like this:

Check that it fits!

Draw inside the hole on to the paper cake shape.

Put the paper shape on to the white felt, draw around the top of the cake to just under the face hole. Draw round it a little wide again to allow for sewing it up later. Cut out two of these icing shapes.

Draw around the face hole on to one of the icing shapes and cut it out.

Draw around the bottom of the cake shape, a little wide again, on to the cake case felt. Cut out two of the case shapes.

Cut out a circle of red felt for the cherry. Here's what you should have:

See that I cut a wiggly line along the bottom of the icing to make it look dribbly.

Step 2.
Decorating!
For the hundreds and thousands, stitch small stitches in different colours all over the icing pieces. Here's what they look like front and back after I stitched the pink ones:

Keep going stitching different colours until you have a good sprinkling!

Dab a little glue along the bottom edge of the icing pieces and the top edge of the cake case piece. Glue them in to place like this:

When the glue is dry, sandwich your creature inside the cupcake costume.

Put a pin through to hold it still. Stitch the sides of the costume using over stitch in matching threads. Have a look at the GETTING STARTED link at the top right of the blog if you are not sure how to sew. Leave the parts where his ears stick through open! Follow the coloured stitching lines on the picture below:

Glue the cherry circle on the top of the cupcake. Cut a tiny crescent moon shape out of the left over white felt, glue it on to the cherry. You're done! Hooray!
